documentation of St. Peter and Paul orthodox church in Karlovy Vary
job: orthodox church of St. Peter and Paul in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic
investor: Russian orthodox church
date: summer 2011
content: survey and completion of technical documentation using 3D laser scanning
During
the summer months we participated in the project of reconstruction of
the Orthodox Church in Karlovy Vary by providing technical documentation of current condition of the church and the rectory by means of 3D laser scanning

scanning from surrounding roofs
The orthodox church of St. Peter and Paul was constructed in the last decade of the 19th century in Neo-russian style, designed after an existing temple in Ostankino near Moscow. The construction took over four years and was realized by architect Gustav Wiedermann. The church is 35 meters long, 14 meters wide and the bell tower 40 meters high. The nave is ended by a central tower surrounded by four smaller towers, all finished with onion shape spires. Facades of the church are rich in decoration and the spires gilded.
Interior consists of narthex, nave and sanctuary separated by wooden templon. The lower level accommodates technical and educational facilities.

Due to the size and complexity of the church and especially the facades we decided to employ 3D laser scanning to obtain all data for processing the technical documentation. We used 100 scan stations to cover all parts of interiors and exteriors and the final 5mm grid pointcloud consists of 380 million points. Because of the height of the church some of the scanning had to be carried out on roofs of surrounding buildings. We also scanned the rectory house situated next to the church which added to the already huge dataset collected at the church.
The results are 2D drawings of plans, sections and elevations of the church and the rectory. We also provided the client with 3D model made of the registered pointcloud, individual registered scans for further examination and interpretation and a short fly-through animation you can see on this page.

We co-operated with MEDIKA Projekt Karlovy Vary s.r.o., a designer office that covers the whole reconstruction project. We would like to thank to Medika and the church personnel for help in providing us with ideal surveying conditions.
